Elizabeth is “America’s Containership Capital”

Elizabeth is home to the Elizabeth Port Authority Marine Terminal, which along with Port Newark operates as one fully integrated marine terminal forming the largest and most comprehensive collection of maritime cargo handling facilities on the East Coast of North America.

The entire 2,100-acre complex is part of Foreign-Trade Zone No. 49, which is operated by the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey. Companies with Trade Zone status are able to defer, reduce or eliminate U.S. Customs Duties.

The Port Authority recently announced a record-breaking year for the port, with container volumes up over eight percent at 78 million tons and the total value of cargo in the port up nearly 12 percent at $100 billion.

Elizabeth’s Rail and Interstate Transportation Network

Plans are well underway for a 5.8 mile, 11 station Light Rail Line, connecting Midtown Elizabeth with Newark Liberty International Airport via the new retail, entertainment and hotel developments growing near the City’s Exit 13A of the New Jersey Turnpike.

Elizabeth’s rail and interstate transportation network serves the Northeast commercial corridor from Boston to Washington, D.C. In addition, the Norfolk-Southern and CSX Railroads traverse the City. Major interstate roadways such as I-95 (the New Jersey Turnpike) and I-278 also run through Elizabeth.

Other planned infrastructure upgrades and improvements in Elizabeth include a ferry service to Manhattan, the Union County Transportation Center and a North Avenue Corridor Improvement Project – with direct access to the new Exit 13A commercial developments and the Port Authority Marine Terminal.
